1972年8月1日香港理工學院成立,開辦技術同埋實用科目嘅文憑同埋高級文憑課程。為當時嘅中學畢業生,提供升讀兩間主流大學以外嘅出路。香港理工學院係香港唯一一間理工,直至到1984年成立香港城市理工學院。1994年11月25日香港理工學院正式升格為「香港理工大學」,成為香港第四間大學。
